Its What We Do!

The following are snapshots of our weekly meetings.

Come join us. We meet every Monday for Lunch at the Burlington Hilton Hotel

 June 10

Our guest speaker was Ken Squier who joined CBS Sports in 1972 and has been the principal announcer for the network's coverage of the Daytona 500 for nearly 20 years. He's also provided winter sports play-by-play for CBS-TV and helped found radio's Motor Racing Network in 1969. He's owner/president of Radio Vermont, which operates four central Vermont radio stations (WDEV-AM, WDEV-FM, WLVB-FM, WCVT-FM. Ken lives in Stowe VT.

It was delightful to sit through his stream of consciousness yesterday and envision the infancy of radio and the early days of auto racing in Vermont.

What an interesting speaker!

It was Sherry Prehoda's turn at the Queen. Alas, she did not pick her. Onto next week.
  June 3

We wrapped up our Hoopapalooza event by recognizing all our very important sponsors, Rotary volunteers, and of most importance, awarded Puppets in Education a check for $10,000.
 June 3

We welcomed four guests from The Rotary Club of Cancun Bicenternario, Quintana Roo, Mexico. These four guests, Alahandro Solis and his wife, Silvia, Guillermo Yee and his wife, Kit have been visiting Burlington since Saturday, staying in the homes of Dave and Fran Mount, and Eric Hansen. They are simply the nicest and most gracious people we have ever met and  certain those of you who spent time with them today would say the same. Alahandro presented us with a Club flag, some very thoughtful gifts, and a "Sister Club Declaration", proclaiming that their Club and ours are indeed "Sister Clubs". President Kim, of course signed the document, memorializing this event. If any of us are fortunate enough to go to Cancun we will receive very special treatment by these very special people.
 June 3

Jim Folger and his associate, Ryan gave an animated presentation about the progress made by the Free Press since its new format. Many like the new format, and it is really working for Free Press Media. It's to bad they were shortchanged with respect to time due to everything else that was going on, but they promised to come back.

Erik Sandblom gave the invocation, weaving the meaning of the Special Olympics into a very caring message. He also had a chance for the Queen but no luck.
 April 22

Our speaker was  Linda Pervier, of Francais Alliance. We also learned a lot!

For example:

French is spoken by 200 million people around the world.

French is the third most spoken foreign language in the US
6,000,000 people speak French in Quebec. (why wouldn’t they?)
France is the number 1 tourist destination in the world.
Over 30% of the English vocabulary is derived from French.

We liked our speaker so much, we made her a member of our Club! Actually, Linda came to us through the normal, accepted protocol, and is sponsored by Lise Veronneau.

Shelly Richardson was our raffle winner but alas, did not draw the right card. On to next week.

Welcome

Service above Self

In preparation for becoming President of the Rotary Club of Burlington, I attended a Presidents training session during which all incoming Presidents were asked to high-light their clubs service projects.  I quickly started writing, and by the time it became my turn to speak my list was 17 items long.  The entrees ranged from Hands for Honduras to Pure Water for the World, from recognizing Burlingtons fine Police Force to awarding medals to some very special athletes at the Special Olympics; from a beautification project for the Gateway to Burlington to planting flowers at City Hall Plaza.  My list went on and on, and it was the same for many of the others.  Service above Self is more than a slogan; it is a way of life for the Rotary Club of Burlington and 32,000 Rotary Clubs around the world.
