Melanoma Education - Early Detection Saves Lives

The American Cancer Society predicts 234,000 new U.S. cases of melanoma in 2026. it is often lethal if not found and removed at an early stage. Fortunately it is easy to find by yourself. As an active Rotarian I have done over 600 Zoom presentations on early self-detection and prevention of melanoma to Rotary Clubs throughout the U.S. and Canada since mid-2022. Most clubs have been impacted by melanoma, affecting members, family members, friends, or colleagues. Peabody Rotary Club of Massachusetts, where I’m a Director, has two melanoma survivors, one is currently undergoing treatment for stage 4 metastatic melanoma. Although the average U.S. melanoma diagnosis age is 65 years it can strike preteens to elderly but, when found early, can be cured permanently in a short outpatient visit without follow-up chemo or radiation. |

New Pediatrics Chair at Larner College of Medicine

Dr. Schaechter succeeds Lewis First, M.D., M.S., who joined the University of Vermont in 1994 as professor and chair of pediatrics and has served in these roles ever since, making him the longest-serving pediatric department chair in the nation. As chair of the Department of Pediatrics and chief of pediatrics, Schaechter will oversee the department’s clinical, research, and educational missions. The department has a long-standing reputation for exceptional clinical care, a vibrant research environment, and excellence in the education and training of medical students, residents, and fellows. The Golisano Children’s Hospital at UVM Health and the Department of Pediatrics encompass six academic hospital sites and five primary care locations across Vermont and northern New York. They also include a Children’s Specialty Care Center offering more than 20 pediatric subspecialties, as well as comprehensive inpatient services—ranging from general pediatric and nursery care to pediatric intensive care and neonatal intensive care. |

FARM FISHING IN THE DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF CONGO

Sustainable Aquaculture and Community Empowerment Project . Location : Rural Community in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Province of Maniema , Town of Kindu , Lokala Concession (Jules Wetchi’s family Concession which located at 13km with the town of Kindu). Many rural African communities rely on fishing as a primary source of food and income. However, overfishing, climate change, and limited access to modern aquaculture techniques have reduced yields and threatened livelihoods. This project aims to establish a sustainable fish farming system that boosts food security, creates jobs, and protects natural water resources. |
